Writing yourself in a memoir or personal essay is a daunting challenge. Through a mixture of lecture, discussion, and generative writing exercises, participants in this 90-minute workshop will explore how to write the self as a character. We will move beyond surface impressions to develop a richer, more authentic portrait of the central character of your work (i.e. you). Kate Gies is the author of It Must Be Beautiful to Be Finished: A Memoir of My Body. She teaches creative nonfiction at George Brown College. Her writing has appeared in The Globe and Mail, The Walrus, The Malahat Review, The Humber Literary Review, Hobart, and the Best Canadian Essays 2024 Anthology. She lives in Toronto.
